The long awaited UK tour of The Darkness hits Southampton, with a packed out Guildhall of all ages which is always refreshing to see. The crowd sufficiently harmed up with the impressive support from Foxy Shazam who with no doubt has gained many more fans from this performance, singing along to Thin Lizzy’s ‘Boys are back in town’ the wait was finally over. Justin Hawkins and co takes the stage after an epic bagpipe intro and blasts out ‘Black Shuck’ to a very vocal crowd. ‘Give me a D, give me an arkness’ shouts frontman Hawkins and the response is as loud as you like from the loyal fans. Hawkins has often been criticized about his vocals live performances, there is no criticism here powerful as if on record and stage presents from a born frontman and wearing a leopard print vest think only he could pull off.
Continuing to keep the crowd alive with favourites ‘growing on me’ ‘get your hands off my woman’ and an early Christmas cheer with ‘Christmas Time’. Not only was the old favourites flowing new songs were introduced which ended any speculation of a reunion ‘just for money’ and an announcement of a new album in the works for 2012. The encore still brings electricity flowing in this great venue with ‘I believe in a thing called love’ a heartfelt speech from the very grateful Hawkins and finally ending on ‘Love On The Rocks With No Ice’.
The Darkness are a band that not all people take seriously, however by this performance they reminded people that rock was made for fun, entertainment and to bring people together and they really did tonight not one person left disappointed. The Darkness are back and are here to stay bigger and better than ever.

Have you ever heard a song and felt the song is about you? maybe we all have. It can go much further than ‘that song is so about me’ to ‘you’re so right, im going to do something about it’. That happened to me and it was this song ‘No Apologies’ by hard rock band Trapt.
Holding your breath, holding your tongue
you’re only holding yourself back
So much to say, so far to run,
out from the shadow you have cast.
*Chorus*
The best days of your life have yet to come
but it’s okay, its alright to open up
You don’t owe anybody anything
Life is yours to live anyway you please, no apologies
No promise left for you to keep
You can be whoever you want to be, no apologies
Closing the door, closing your eyes,
You’re only closing yourself off.
So much to see, so much to try,
Don’t be afraid of what you want.
*Chorus*
The best days of your life have yet to come
but it’s okay, its alright to open up
You don’t owe anybody anything
Life is yours to live anyway you please, no apologies
No promise left for you to keep
You can be whoever you want to be, no apologies
Don’t wanna be no one else
What you see is what you get
No one to please, no apologies, no apologies
*Chorus*
The best days of your life have yet to come
but it’s okay, its alright to open up
You don’t owe anybody anything
Life is yours to live anyway you please, no apologies
No promise left for you to keep
You can be whoever you want to be, no apologies
Why this song? well for quite a few years in my life (and possibly you’res too) there have been people that have always try to rubbish anything i did or wanted to do. If it was towards my DJ’ing, Music tastes, the way I look, my radio show or whatever it was at the time. However the last two or so years have been amoung the best years of my life and I am not affaid to say that I am proud of myself. I was affaid of writing because I thought I wasnt good enough, now I write band and album reviews, I get 2.1s for essays that im passionate about. I interview bands, I have a radio show and i have people that believe in what I do and i have no apologies about that.
For those people who get a kick about making others feel like shit. When you go to the same places, do the same things and acting like you’re better, when most likely you envy those people because you’re scared/to lazy to do anything about the lack of respect that people really have for you.
How did this one song make me think of all that jive? well you tell me, when you’ve found ‘that song’ for you’re self. Maybe you’ve already found it, if you’re one of those people tell someone about it. Im really glad that I did.
Much Love

July 2011 marks the third Sonisphere festival at Knebworth. From the success of Fridays hype of many metalheads dreams of the ‘Big 4’ (despite all four bands play a UK festival every year, and having them on the same day makes sooooo much difference) and the controversial appointment of Saturdays headliners Biffy Clyro(who, from what Ive been told really showed what their worth), came the equally anticipatedlast day with the mighty Slipknot coming to the end of their emotional tour, celebrating the life of the much loved by millions Paul Gray. This Sundaywas bound to have much emotion, togetherness and celebration. This is that day though my eyes.
It didn’t have the best of starts with the some what tedious Black Tide (5) playing what seemed to be the same song over and over again until they played their trademark ‘Warriors of Time’ with a sound from the crowed as if to say ‘oh they did that song’. Arch Enemy (7) are the one to wake you up in the morning and they certainly did that with some force. House of Pain (6) get the party started only 20 minutes into their set when playing their hit ‘Jump around’, this makes everyone go wild, not one person was stood still. After the touching two minute silence for the late Paul Gray In Flames (7) took the stage with a blinding response from the Swedish metal loving audience. Mastodon (5) didn’t quite have the same reaction and they knew it with this very average performance from the hairy metal mob. A bit of time time to get a filthy festival burger before Anberlin (8) introduced their rock anthems, who stepped up an extra gear after the sound man realised that Stephan Christian’s mic wasn’t turned up three songs into the set. Despite this Anberlin would certainly be welcome to return to the UK more often with this top show. Exit Ten (7) did very well with their sing-a-long friendly tracks, forming a very handsome set of followers on the smaller Jagermeister stage. It was then time for a taste of Scottish piracy from the swash buckling Alestorm (10) who showed no sign of walking the plank. Bringing huge amount of energy to the rammed tent with much singing, dancing and a yo ho ho. Not one shipmate sailed away disappointed. The much talked about performance from the insanely funny Bill Bailey (8) who didn’t have the best of starts with once again mic issues, once that was sorted huge laughs were has by all. Great work from the crowd during ‘Asda I ain’t gunna be your bitch’ and much excitement from the hooter version of Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’. Slipknot (9) would alway be an emotional one, with one member down and this clearly showed with a more aggressive performance than in previous year, but still very solid and every maggot was as one. Not even the rain could put a dumper on this truley memorable show.
So Sonisphere 2011 came to a close and what a great day it has been. Something that will stay with everyone who was there would be the two minute silence for Paul Gray. I don’t think I have ever witnessed any level of loyalty and respect than that moment, for the much loved and talented bassist, who will be sawly missed but never forgotten. This goes to show that everyone in the metal community in whatever shape or form are one worldwide family of which I am prowed to be a part of.
Sonisphere , Knebworth 2012 connot come soon enough.
Much love
Your Gooch.
